The Little Black Box
Repurpose On Purpose
Some objects are too beautiful to part with, yet somehow find themselves tucked away... kept, but no longer truly part of our lives.
This little black metal box was one of them.
When I came across it, it begged to be opened and considered.
Faint flowers still wander across its surface, with a heraldic shield painted on the lid. For years, it had held a miscellaneous collection of foreign coins, the sort that accumulate after journeys and then quietly wait for the possibility of another use.
It was a melancholy life.
This box wanted more!
Too beautiful to be left languishing in some dark corner, half remembered.
Then, while organizing a collection of jewelry into beautiful velvet trays, it all came together. There were a few extra velvet dividers. I had the necessary tools...
Et voilà!
Nothing new purchased. Nothing precious altered. Two things that had outlived their original purposes simply found a new life together.
Now, instead of holding forgotten change, the box holds a collection of everyday earrings. It is opened almost every day and holds pride of place at the center of the dresser.
And somehow, through being used and noticed again, it feels renewed.
Perhaps repurposing isn't always about rescuing something from being discarded. Sometimes it's about finding a new way to bring something we already love back into the rhythm of daily life.
To take a moment to ask the question…
How might I bring your beauty into my everyday life?
